Concept Development

IDEA GENERATION

In an endeavor to blur the lines between reality and imagination, we embarked on an experimental photoshoot that defied the laws of physics, featuring tennis balls as the central subject. Our team, known for its innovative approach to visual storytelling, leveraged advanced photographic techniques to create a surreal series of images that captivated and intrigued viewers.

Research & inspiration

Our team delved into surrealist photography, drawing inspiration from Salvador Dalí's dreamlike compositions and the high-speed photography techniques of modern artists. We also explored scientific principles of motion and gravity to inform our approach.

1.

Photography

Pre-shoot planning

Planning was meticulous. We prepared a detailed storyboard, outlined equipment needs, and scouted locations for optimal lighting conditions. A significant challenge was finding the perfect studio with high ceilings and ample space for our custom-built rigs and suspension systems.

Execution

The shoot took place over a week in a state-of-the-art studio. We used high-speed cameras capable of capturing minute details in rapid motion. Custom-built rigs and invisible wires were employed to suspend the tennis balls. However, maintaining the illusion of levitation required numerous adjustments and precise timing.

challenges faced

One of the main challenges was achieving the perfect suspension without visible supports. Invisible wires had to be fine-tuned to avoid casting shadows. Additionally, we encountered issues with static electricity causing the tennis balls to cling to each other or the rigging, which required constant troubleshooting.

2.

Styling & Retouching

styling

The tennis balls were given unique textures and vibrant colors to stand out. Backgrounds were chosen to contrast and enhance the surreal theme, ranging from minimalistic white to abstract swirls of color. Props included custom-made miniature tennis nets and rackets to add context.

retouching

Post-production was an intensive process. We used advanced software to remove any traces of the rigging and wires, ensuring a clean and magical look. Color correction and enhancement were applied to emphasize the surreal nature of the images. Each image was meticulously retouched to highlight the floating illusion.

3.

Set Design

initial setup

The set design involved intricate planning. Various setups were experimented with, including suspended platforms and hidden supports. Each element was carefully placed to maintain the illusion of floating tennis balls.

Execution

The final set design was a blend of physical props and digital enhancements. Invisible wires and custom-built rigs played a crucial role in creating the desired effects. Each shot was a result of trial and error, ensuring perfect alignment and balance.

4.

Final Outcome

results

The final series of photographs were nothing short of mesmerizing. The images captured the essence of our concept, showcasing tennis balls in surreal, gravity-defying scenarios. The photos were exhibited in a gallery, drawing significant attention and acclaim.

storefront exhibit

In addition to the gallery exhibition, we created a stunning storefront exhibit featuring polar bears holding tennis rackets amidst various tennis paraphernalia. This installation required meticulous planning and execution.

The storefront exhibit was designed to captivate passersby and draw them into the surreal world we created. Life-sized polar bear models were crafted using high-density foam and meticulously painted to achieve a realistic appearance. Each bear was positioned to interact with the tennis balls, which were suspended using the same invisible wire technique from the photoshoot. Tennis paraphernalia, including rackets and nets, were arranged around the bears to create a whimsical tennis court scene.

client feedback

The client was thrilled with both the photoshoot and the storefront exhibit. They praised the creativity and attention to detail, noting that the project successfully challenged conventional perceptions and sparked conversations about the intersection of art and physics.

Conclusion

This experimental photoshoot and subsequent storefront exhibit pushed the boundaries of traditional photography, blending artistic vision with technical precision. The collaboration of diverse talents resulted in a visually captivating and thought-provoking project that defied the laws of physics.

BTS

preliminary sketches

With my original sketches, I aimed to roughly form the layout of the exhibit, capturing the whimsical yet surreal essence of our concept. The initial idea was to create a captivating scene that would draw viewers into an imaginative world where polar bears play tennis amidst floating tennis balls. The sketches featured life-sized polar bears positioned in dynamic poses, holding tennis rackets and interacting with various tennis paraphernalia.I focused on ensuring that each element contributed to the overall narrative, blending the fantastical with a touch of realism. The tennis balls were strategically placed to appear as if suspended in mid-air, maintaining the illusion of defying gravity. These early sketches were instrumental in visualizing the final installation, serving as a blueprint for the intricate set design and precise placement of props.
